Western Dressage Association of Oklahoma

There’s a new equestrian sport in Oklahoma; a new twist on an old favorite! Western dressage has come to Oklahoma. Western Dressage takes the classic fundamentals of the traditional discipline of dressage and combines them with western gaits, tack and attire to create western dressage.

So what is western dressage exactly? According to the Western Dressage Association of America, “it is a combination of light hands, subtle cues, and an appreciation for the ultimate benefits derived from a true partnership between horse and rider. These ideas led to a revolution in western horsemanship. It was only natural that at some point that these ideas of classical dressage would meet the spirit of the western horse.” When that day arrived, western dressage was born.

Western Dressage Association of Oklahoma president, Mrs. Paula Walker is extremely excited to be heading up the organization that is bringing this sport to Oklahoma. “This has been a long process, however it has been extremely rewarding. We look forward to bringing dressage to a wider audience through western dressage. Western dressage opens the door for people to become aware of the benefits of dressage in a fun and challenging arena.”

The WDAOK will be holding classes at local schooling shows in the upcoming months. The first will be this Sunday, September 9th at Rocking C Stables in Inola, Okla. Follwing this weekend’s show there will be five others through November.

What is the new association and what do you do to get involved. I have not rode for several years due to a head injury but I an wanting to get back into it. A friend of mine and I were talking a few weeks ago and thought it would be to learn dressage but we are western riders and would not have the skill to do english. Send me information on the new association and what we would need to do to get involved.

I would suggest you visit their Website or Facebook page and contact them directly. They are always looking for more like-minded people to get involved and help further the education of Western Dressage. Good luck!

    • Katrina, sorry to take so long to answer you back. I just now realized there was a comment under our article. We would LOVE to have you involved with our affiliate. Yes we are dressage based, but we are Western riders in Western saddles on mostly stock horses who are striving to learn and understand the age old principles of a solid systematic, humane way of training your horse. Tack and background don’t matter. We have all been there and “get it”. We too all had to come from somewhere else. So there is a variety of backgrounds that have all come to one common ground, and that ground is Western Dressage! Please feel free to contact me at jpwalkerosa@tds.net or email me and I will give you my phone number and we can have a great chat about it!!.Thank you so much for your inquiry. Hope to talk to you soon, Paula Walker, president WDAOK
